The Model Goes to Macau

A card built on debutants, reset stories, and one heavyweight read the model is leaning into hard.

Lookboonmee vs. Amorim

The opener at women’s strawweight is the closest call on the card. The model is essentially at coinflip range here, and the published pick lands on Jaqueline Amorim. The stylistic split is clean: Loma Lookboonmee has 200-plus Muay Thai bouts and nine championships in her background, with a UFC profile built around clinch volume and decision pace. Amorim is a BJJ black belt out of American Top Team Coconut Creek with 8 of her 10 career wins by submission and a 3.8 sub-attempt-per-15 UFC rate. The path for Amorim is closing distance, hitting the mat, and finding a finish before her cardio question shows up. Lookboonmee gassed Amorim early in their last reference points, but Lookboonmee’s bouts almost always reach the third round.

Zhu Kangjie vs. Rodrigo Vera

This is where the model gets loud on the prelims. Rodrigo Vera is the pick, and he arrives as the strongest regional resume of any UFC debutant on the card: 21-1-1, a 5-fight win streak, FFC champion at featherweight with title defenses against Varela, Martinez, Zenidim, and Eduardo, plus a recent LFA win over Caetano. He’s “El Gato Loco,” a national no-gi jiu-jitsu champion training out of Peru and Brazil. Zhu Kangjie won his Road to UFC season and has the home-crowd lift in Macau, but the matchup hinges on his takedown defense. Against Shin Haraguchi in the RTU final, Zhu was taken down 16 times across the bout. If Vera can impose grappling pressure under fight-week-replacement conditions, the path narrows fast for Zhu.

Angela Hill vs. Xiong Jingnan

The most historically distinctive bout on the card. Angela Hill walks in as the longest-tenured strawweight in division history: 29th UFC strawweight bout, 12 divisional wins, 6 hours 42 minutes of total UFC strawweight fight time, all divisional records. Her 2,242 UFC significant strikes rank third all-time behind Holloway and Strickland. Xiong Jingnan arrives as a two-time ONE strawweight champion, 19-2, seven title defenses, dropping down from her ONE flyweight title days. The gap between them is the biggest UFC experience discrepancy in any female fight in UFC history at 30 bouts. The model favors Xiong, and the stylistic case rests on her 53% career KO rate against a Hill who is 41 years old, on a two-fight skid, and has seen her defensive numbers erode. The wildcard is Xiong’s activity question — she’s fought once in the last three years.

Rei Tsuruya vs. Luis Gurule

The model has Tsuruya in a thin lean, and the matchup explains why. Tsuruya is the higher-ceiling prospect: Pancrase featherweight champion, Road to UFC Season 2 winner, with a UFC profile built around takedowns and submission attempts. His one UFC fight was a competitive decision loss to Joshua Van at UFC 313 in March 2025. Luis Gurule is in on roughly two weeks’ notice after a UD win over Barez on May 16, fighting at bantamweight when both fighters are natural flyweights. The 135-lb question is real for Tsuruya, who relies on grappling pressure that depends on size parity. Gurule has been finished and outpointed at his natural division. The short-notice, off-weight, 14-month-layoff combination makes this the bout where the analytical case is least clean on the prelims.

Aoriqileng vs. Cody Haddon

Cody Haddon is the pick, and the editorial spine is the return story. Haddon hasn’t fought since October 2024. Two consecutive injury-driven withdrawals — UFC 312 against Aleksandre Topuria after a broken foot in sparring plus a partially torn LCL, then UFC 322 at Madison Square Garden after another fight-week foot fracture — cost him roughly 18 months. He told ESPN that during the knee injury recovery, the only thing he could do was box, so he trained boxing for the entire layoff, and people have been complimenting his hands on his return. He’s 1-0 in the UFC with a 9.20 SLpM clip and 83% takedown defense. Aoriqileng is the veteran test: 26-12-1, mostly a decision fighter at ~62%, but he scored a 21-second R1 KO of Cody Gibson at UFC Vancouver in October 2025 that earned a $50,000 Performance bonus. If he lands that same right hand on a rust-shaking Haddon early, the path opens. If not, Haddon’s output should walk him through.

Ding Meng vs. José Souza

Both fighters make their UFC walks for the first time. The model leans Ding at moderate conviction, and the case rests on the activity gap and weight-class familiarity. Ding is 35-9 with 30 career stoppages, the former A1 Combat welterweight champion who took the title via R2 KO over Mirali Huseynov in October 2025. Two scheduled defenses since then were cancelled, so this is Ding’s return after a six-month layoff. José Souza is the story of accumulated delay: a 2023 UFC signing whose debut has been booked and unbooked three times — failed dates against Eric Nolan, Nikolay Veretennikov (postponed when Souza was injured), and Charles Radtke at UFC Vegas 114 — before this one finally landed. He’s 8-1 with all eight wins by stoppage and significant length at 6’3” with a 79-inch reach, but his last MMA bout was November 2024 at middleweight. He’s cutting down to welterweight and fighting on 18 months of inactivity. The matchup math leans Ding on activity and division comfort; Souza’s path is leveraging his reach and finding a finish before rust shows.

YiSak Lee vs. Luis Felipe Dias

The middleweight prelim opener at the top of the undercard pits a Korean direct UFC signing against a Brazilian DWCS finisher. YiSak Lee is the “Tank,” a judo black belt out of Korean Top Team with an 8-1 record, whose only career loss came via R2 RNC to Agilan Thanigasalam in December 2024. Luis Felipe Dias is the higher-output finisher: 17-5 with 16 of 17 career wins by stoppage, a Dana White’s Contender Series Season 9 sign who finished Donovan Hedrick via R2 RNC in his audition. The model favors Dias at moderate conviction, and the matchup is grappler-versus-grappler-finisher where both fighters want the same fight but only one has the deeper finishing-rate sample. Lee has a 17-month layoff to shake off; Dias arrives on momentum.

Alex Perez vs. Sumudaerji

The main card opens at flyweight with the thinnest model lean on the slate. Alex Perez is the pick, but barely. He arrives off a R1 KO of Charles Johnson at UFC 324 — a fight where he missed weight by 2.5 lbs, weighing 128.5 pounds, which cost him 25% of his purse and the $25,000 finish bonus under the updated UFC rule. He’ll be 34 in March, called this “the last fight on his contract” in the UFC.com feature, and publicly committed to a stand-and-bang gameplan despite being the structural wrestling advantage in the matchup. Sumudaerji is on a clean three-fight UFC win streak (UD over Aguilar, Borjas, Raposo) trained out of Team Alpha Male under Faber, with Song Yadong as a stablemate. The stylistic question is whether Perez’s wrestling closes the distance against Sumudaerji’s length and pace. Perez’s average UFC flyweight fight time is 6:25, the second-shortest in divisional history behind only Daniel Lacerda — his bouts tend to end early when he wins. Sumudaerji’s UFC wins have all gone the full 15 minutes. The cleanest binary on the card: Perez by finish or Sumudaerji by decision.

Jake Matthews vs. Carlston Harris

The model has Matthews at moderate conviction in a welterweight bout where his opponent showed up on roughly two weeks’ notice. Matthews’s 24th UFC appearance is the most by any Australian-born fighter in UFC history — he debuted at 19 in 2014, and at age 31 he carries a 15-8 UFC record into Macau. His last fight was the Neil Magny controversy at UFC Perth, where he locked a mounted guillotine that referee Jim Perdios waved off just before the horn of Round 1 thinking Magny was unconscious, then restarted the fight when Magny protested. Matthews adrenaline-dumped, and Magny rallied to a R3 brabo choke submission at 3:08. Carlston Harris arrives in on the Salikhov-replacement booking after originally being scheduled to face Michael Chiesa in March 2026, which fell through due to Chiesa’s visa issues. Harris is on a two-fight KO skid (R1 to Khaos Williams, R3 to Santiago Ponzinibbio) and a 16-month layoff. His finishing specialty is the front choke — anaconda wins over Aguilera and Wells. If Harris doesn’t find a choke in the first half of the fight, the cardio question becomes the dominant variable. Matthews’s recent run and the layoff-plus-short-notice math run in his favor.

Kai Asakura vs. Cameron Smotherman

This is the bout where the analytical case sharpens significantly with new context. Kai Asakura arrives 0-2 in the UFC but both losses came at flyweight against grappling-heavy opponents who closed the distance and submitted him in Round 2 — Alexandre Pantoja by RNC at UFC 310 in his title-shot debut, then Tim Elliott by guillotine at UFC 319. Asakura has said publicly that the flyweight cuts felt unnatural and bantamweight is “more natural” for him. This is his first UFC bout at 135, the division where he held the RIZIN bantamweight title twice with wins over Kyoji Horiguchi and Manel Kape. Sergei Pavlovich vs. Tallison Teixeira

This is the model’s strongest read of the weekend. Sergei Pavlovich is the analytical anchor at heavyweight: 19-3 career, 8-3 UFC, currently ranked #3 in the division. His six-fight UFC first-round KO streak — ended only by Tom Aspinall at UFC 295 — is tied with Don Frye for second-longest in UFC history behind Chuck Liddell’s seven. Each of those six finishes came in Round 1: Blaydes at 3:08, Tuivasa at 0:54, Lewis at 0:55, Abdurakhimov at 4:03, Greene at 2:11, Golm at 1:06. His 2025 evolution shifted him from a R1-or-bust knockout hunter to a more composed boxer with takedown threats, and his back-to-back decisions over Waldo Cortes-Acosta and Jairzinho Rozenstruik confirm the toolkit expansion.

Tallison Teixeira walks in as the rising prospect: 9-1 career, 2-1 in the UFC, ranked #15. His UFC arc has been turbulent — a 35-second R1 TKO of Justin Tafa earned him Performance of the Night at UFC 312, then a 35-second R1 TKO loss in the main event against Derrick Lewis in July 2025, then a bounce-back KO of Tai Tuivasa at UFC 325 in January 2026. He’s 6’7” with an 83-inch reach, training out of Cornerman in São Paulo after leaving Team Lucas Mineiro, with Glover Teixeira as head coach and Alex Pereira as a sparring partner. He called it “the best camp of my life.”

The matchup math is brutal. Teixeira’s striking defense sits at 42% — exactly the profile that gets exposed against a fighter with Pavlovich’s accuracy and power. The path to a Teixeira upset is single-moment, height-and-power dependent against a fighter who has built his career on never giving the single moment back. The Pereira-Glover camp is real confidence work, but it doesn’t change the structural numbers. The model is reading this as the cleanest case on the card.

Zhang Mingyang vs. Alonzo Menifield

The co-main pits a divisional finisher against a divisional veteran in a fight the model reads at moderate conviction. Zhang Mingyang is “The Mountain Tiger”: 19-7 career, all 19 of his career wins by stoppage, every single one in Round 1. He’s a Muay Thai striker with 7.71 SLpM and three UFC R1 KOs to open his promotional run, including a finish of former title challenger Anthony Smith at UFC 312 in April 2025. His setback came in his August 2025 UFC Shanghai main event against Johnny Walker, where two stiff calf kicks dropped Zhang in Round 2 and Walker finished with ground-and-pound at 2:37 — the first time in 16 fights, dating back to 2018, that Zhang had been past the first round.

Alonzo Menifield is 17-6-1 with a documented pattern of winning fights in pairs after losses, and he’s coming off a R1 KO loss to Volkan Oezdemir in November 2025. His Von Flue submission at UFC 260 is one of only eight in UFC history. He sits at 78% takedown defense with grinding durability that has historically dragged opponents into rounds they don’t want to fight.

The matchup is bimodal. If Zhang lands clean early, this looks like every other Zhang win on his record. If Menifield survives Round 1 and the Walker template plays out — calf kicks, lateral pressure, dragging Zhang into deep water — the analytical edge shifts. The model has Zhang on home soil with the finishing pressure advantage, but the conviction is measured precisely because that Walker fight exists.

Song Yadong vs. Deiveson Figueiredo

The main event is where the analytical center of the card lives, and where the model holds its confident read. Song Yadong is the model’s pick, and the case is built across striking output, divisional positioning, and a stylistic matchup that runs in Song’s favor more than the surface numbers suggest.

Song competes in his fifth UFC headliner with a 3-1 record in previous main events. He’s 22-9-1 career, 11-4-1 in the UFC, ranked #5 at bantamweight. His striking sits at 4.42 SLpM with 55% defense — significantly higher output than Figueiredo at 2.63 SLpM and 49% defense. His last five fights: a decision loss to Sean O’Malley at UFC 324, a technical decision win over Henry Cejudo at UFC Fight Night Seattle in February 2025 that he called “the biggest win of my career,” a decision loss to Petr Yan, and wins over Chris Gutierrez and Ricky Simon. The O’Malley loss is the most analytically useful data point — O’Malley used reach and length to thwart Song’s pressure and counter-strike, which is the diagnostic for what beats Song.

Deiveson Figueiredo arrives as a flyweight legend in the bantamweight division. He’s one of six UFC flyweight champions in history. He and Brandon Moreno are the only opponents in UFC history to face each other four times. He still holds the fastest title-fight turnaround in UFC history at 21 days, between UFC 255 and UFC 256. His 7 UFC flyweight stoppage wins tie for second-most in division history with Demetrious Johnson, behind only Alexandre Pantoja’s 8. His 11 flyweight knockdowns are tied for most in division history. Since moving to bantamweight in December 2023, he’s gone 4-3: wins over Rob Font (UD), Cody Garbrandt (R2 submission at UFC 300), Marlon Vera (UD), and Montel Jackson; losses to Petr Yan, Cory Sandhagen (knee injury TKO), and Umar Nurmagomedov. The pattern in his BW losses tells you exactly what beats him: rangy strikers and wrestling pressure. Song brings both.

Figueiredo holds a one-inch reach advantage despite the three-inch height differential. He arrived at 147 lbs on Monday before weigh-ins and trained with Fighting Nerds plus Pitbull Brothers camp. He told Sherdog he expects a “late finish” of Song — Round 4 submission specifically — and his framing tells you exactly what he believes: that Song’s cardio fades, that the fight stretches, and that a submission opens late. The contrarian read on Song, surfaced in deeper analytical pieces this week, aligns with that thesis: Song’s last KO came in 2023, his cardio reportedly drops in Round 3, and he telegraphs strikes when he’s pressing for a finish.

The model still lands on Song at confident conviction. The case rests on the activity gap, the divisional fit, and the structural matchup. Song is 28; Figueiredo is 38. Song is fighting in his third UFC main event in China. Song’s striking volume and defense numbers are simply better than Figueiredo’s, and his height advantage matters even when reach is a wash. The Figueiredo path is real — he has finishing power, championship-level finishing pedigree, and the patience to find a late submission. But the diagnostic is whether Figueiredo, who has lost his most consistent bantamweight tests against fighters with Song’s toolkit, finds a different answer in Macau.

The pick is Song.

This card carries its analytical weight at the top. Pavlovich is the cleanest read of the weekend at heavyweight. The main event delivers the kind of divisional question that rankings genuinely turn on. The historic experience gap at women’s strawweight makes Hill-Xiong a fight that won’t be replicable. And the prelim slate is a stress-test of how regional credentials translate to the Octagon, with seven debutants carrying very different stories of how they got here.

By the stat most sports media still leans on, those two analysts just tied.

But if you are a fan trying to figure out who to trust, those are obviously not the same forecast. One said, “this is basically a coin flip.” The other said, “this should almost never lose.” Accuracy cannot tell them apart.

That is the problem this article is about, and the reason a metric built for weather in 1950 still happens to be one of the cleanest tools we have for grading any sports model that publishes probabilities.

It is also the lens I want MMA Fight Advisor to use on its own work: not just “did we pick the side,” but “did our confidence level deserve to be trusted?”

The one-line definition

For a binary event, meaning a simple yes-or-no outcome, the single-forecast Brier score is:

where:

• p is the predicted probability that the event happens

• y is 1 if it happens and 0 if it does not

In plain English: take the gap between what you predicted and what actually happened, square it, and average that across all your forecasts. That is it. The math is one line because the idea is one line.

Lower is better.

Three anchors make the scale intuitive right away:

• 0.00 = perfect

• 0.25= what you get by saying 50% every time

• 1.00 = certainty in the wrong direction

A bit of history

The score is named after Glenn W. Brier, a meteorologist who introduced it in 1950 while evaluating weather forecasts stated in probabilities.

That origin matters. Weather forecasters were not just asking, “Did it rain?” They were asking, “When we said 30%, 60%, or 90%, did those numbers actually mean what we claimed they meant?”

Sports models have exactly the same problem.

If your model says a favorite wins 58% of the time, that is not just a pick. It is a probability claim. The Brier score exists to grade that claim.

Four tiny examples that explain almost everything

That table is the whole argument in miniature.

Accuracy sees only two buckets: correct and wrong.

Brier sees something much more human:

• A narrow lean is not the same thing as a conviction pick

• A small miss is not the same thing as a catastrophic overconfident miss

• Confidence should be rewarded only when it is deserved

Why Brier is better than accuracy

If you are publishing hard picks, accuracy is fine. If you are publishing probabilities, accuracy is grading the wrong thing.

Accuracy treats these as identical:

- “I think this side wins 51% of the time.”

- “I think this side wins 90% of the time.”

But those are wildly different statements. One says “coin flip with a lean.” The other says “this should almost always cash.” If both happen to win once, accuracy calls it a tie. Brier does not.

Even better, Brier does not just reward caution. It rewards honesty.

If you are really right about 70% of the time, the best long-run number to report is about 70%, not 55% and not 90%x.

Put even more plainly: if you really are right 70% of the time, saying 70% beats pretending 55% or 90%. That is the whole chart.

That is one of the elegant things about the metric: it quietly pressures you to be calibrated. Inflate your probabilities and you get punished. Sandbag them too much and you also leave score on the table.

Same accuracy, very different forecasting skill

Here is a toy example with three forecasters who all go 7-for-10:

Accuracy sees a three-way tie.

Brier sees what actually happened:

• the honest forecaster was best

• the timid forecaster was decent but too cautious

• the cowboy was worst because the confidence level was fake

That is a much better summary of forecasting quality.

Why this matters in sports

In sports, probabilities are the whole game.

A model that says a fighter is 52% to win and a model that says 82% are not making the same recommendation, even if both technically pick the same side.

That is exactly why this matters for MMA Fight Advisor. If we are going to publish probabilities, those numbers need to do more than point to the right side. They need to tell readers how much confidence that side actually deserves.

Those numbers affect:

• how surprised you should be by an upset

• how much edge you think you have versus the market

• how aggressively you would stake anything

• whether the forecaster is just guessing the right side or actually getting the confidence level right too

Accuracy erases all of that. Brier keeps it.

That is why a probability metric is usually more useful than a pick metric for betting models, Elo systems, and weather forecasts.

Brier is really a calibration score in disguise

The cleanest way to think about calibration is this:

• Among all your 70% forecasts, about 70% of them should happen

• Among all your 30% forecasts, about 30% of them should happen

When that relationship holds, your model is telling the truth about uncertainty.

Accuracy can miss this completely. A model can be overconfident for years and still look decent on accuracy if it keeps landing on the right side of 50% often enough.

The Brier score notices much earlier, because it cares about the distance between the forecasted probability and reality on every single prediction.

The quickest intuition cheat sheet

If you only remember a few landmarks, remember these:

• 0.00 is perfect

• Around 0.25 means “you are basically living at 50%”

• Big confident misses get ugly fast

• Lower is always better, but compare it to baselines and rival models, not to some universal magic cutoff

Closing

Accuracy is still useful if all you want is a pick’em leaderboard.

But if the output is a probability, accuracy is grading the wrong object.

The Brier score asks a better question: were your probabilities any good?

That is why a metric built for weather forecasting in 1950 still feels tailor-made for modern sports modeling. It rewards what we actually care about: not just being right sometimes, but being right with the right level of confidence.

For MMA Fight Advisor, that is the standard that matters. Not just “did we land the side?” but “were we honest about how confident we should have been?”

Arnold Allen, ranked seventh and sitting at 1-3 in his last four, faces twelfth-ranked Melquizael Costa on a six-fight win streak in Costa’s first UFC main event. Below that, a returning Doo Ho Choi tries to find timing after a seventeen-month layoff against a Daniel Santos who has won four straight but absorbed knockdowns in the last two. A prospect bouncing back against a hyped debutant. Two late-notice replacements on the same news cycle. A ranked women’s bantamweight clash with title implications. And a pair of prelims the model can’t get clean conviction on.

The picks run reverse order from prelim one to the main event below. Each carries the model’s read on the fight, the structural detail that matters most, and an honest read on how strongly the model lands there.

Bannon vs. Caliari — Women’s Strawweight

The model takes Nicolle Caliari in the opening fight, though the matchup plays closer than the call suggests at first read. Caliari sits 0-2 in the UFC across two fights at flyweight, and the most recent of those ended with a third-round knee that finished her at 1:30 of round three. She’s making the cut down to 115 for this one, which adds a variable nobody on the outside can fully price.

Shauna Bannon arrives 2-2, coming off a second-round submission loss to Sam Hughes that exposed real takedown defense problems. Her UFC tape shows a 40% takedown defense, which is the kind of number that matters more in a strawweight scramble than in a stand-up exchange. The model lands on Caliari because her recent volume profile and youth edge tilt the read in her direction, but the qualitative picture is closer than the call alone communicates. This is a fight where Caliari needs to make the weight cleanly and find her range early.

The pick is Caliari with the asterisk of a weight class mover.

Barez vs. Gurule — Flyweight

The model lands on Luis Gurule in the flyweight bout, though both fighters arrive on losing streaks. Gurule is 0-3 in the UFC, including a round-two knockout loss to Ode Osbourne. Daniel Barez is 1-2 with two submission losses on his recent ledger. Neither fighter has built a UFC argument, and the loser of this fight is likely released.

The read favors Gurule on his higher striking volume against an aging Barez. At 37, Barez is the oldest fighter on the card. He’s been finished twice by submission in his last two losses, and Gurule’s path is to push pace, force exchanges, and trust that a fighter coming off a long layoff at 37 will fade in the later rounds of a three-round fight.

The pick is Gurule with cautious framing. The model sees a thin edge, not a confident call.

Viana vs. Ardelean — Women’s Strawweight

This is the cleanest stylistic case on the prelims. Alice Ardelean lands at over seven significant strikes per minute, which puts her near the top of the entire card on output. Her last two wins came on 138 and 154 significant strikes landed across three rounds. The volume style is real and replicable.

Polyana Viana brings the opposite profile. Low-output, submission-heavy, and the kind of fighter who needs the fight to find the ground to win. Her UFC career has produced four first-round submissions and one first-round knockout among five visible wins. The problem is the recent picture: three consecutive losses, two of them finishes against her, and a 35% takedown defense that says she gets exactly the kind of scramble she doesn’t want against a volume striker who happily works off the back foot.

The model takes Ardelean. The structural mismatch favors her staying upright, picking apart Viana from range, and grinding out the three rounds. Viana’s path is a first-round body lock into her armbar, the move she’s hit three times in her UFC tape. If she can’t find it in the first five minutes, the volume war ends in Ardelean’s favor.

There is a small narrative wrinkle worth noting. Ardelean lost a split decision to Shauna Bannon on this same card eighteen months ago. Bannon opens the night against Caliari.

Brundage vs. Petroski — Middleweight

This is one of two fights on the card where the model has the least conviction. The call goes to Cody Brundage, but the read is held with explicitly thin-signal framing. The honest answer is that this fight is harder to predict than most.

Both fighters arrive on losing streaks. Brundage is 0-3 across his last three, including a second-round knockout loss to Cam Rowston in January. Marco Tulio vs. Roman Kopylov (Middleweight) Kopylov gets the call here. This is the closest the model came to a true toss-up on the prelims. Tulio is a high-volume Chute Boxe brawler with real pressure, and Kopylov has shown a tendency to mentally fold when he is being walked down. Joaquin Buckley vs. Sean Brady (Welterweight) The model lands on Brady, and this is one of the tighter reads on the main card. Both fighters are coming off losses that exposed them. Sean Strickland vs. Khamzat Chimaev (Main Event, Middleweight Title) Chimaev wins this on the mat. Strickland’s takedown defense, listed at 84% for his career, has held up against most of the division and broken down against the elite. Du Plessis took him down six times in their first title fight. Kamaru Usman took him down at will. Chimaev is a more aggressive wrestler than either, with chain-wrestling layers Strickland has not had to solve before. The argument for Strickland is the fifth round. Chimaev’s pace did fall off against Du Plessis at UFC 319. The Mar Fan storyline running underneath this fight is the rich one: both of his career losses are to Quillan Salkilld, who fights in the co-main event of this same card. The same fighter Mar Fan couldn’t solve twice on the regional circuit is four hours up the running order in front of the same Perth crowd.

Stylistically, Steele’s path is power and pace either ending in a stoppage inside ten minutes or accumulating into a wrestling-led decision. Mar Fan’s path is range management, technical Muay Thai, and either out-pointing Steele over fifteen minutes or catching him in a scramble. The likely outcome is a decision either way, with Steele’s striking power leaving a credible KO path open. The pick is Steele, but the read on this fight stays restrained.

Themba Gorimbo vs. Jonathan Micallef

This is the cleanest stylistic read on the prelims. Micallef’s specific tactical strengths line up directly against Gorimbo’s specific weaknesses, and the model’s high conviction reflects that.

He retired from MMA two years ago to focus on coaching, vacated his Eternal MMA middleweight title, recently got married, has a child on the way, and was called out of retirement when Darcy Vendy couldn’t compete. If Johnston’s striking holds up and his submission instincts show, this ends inside the distance. If Schultz’s wrestling lands and Johnston’s two-year layoff plus shoulder surgery shows in his takedown defense, this becomes a position-led decision or a Schultz finish off top control. Vince Morales vs. Colby Thicknesse

What keeps this from being a clean closeout is Meerschaert’s upset history. His comeback submission wins over Bruno Silva and Edmen Shahbazyan are part of the divisional folklore. His path is the one-window scramble, finding a small opening for a trademark submission. Malkoun himself acknowledged the threat in his pre-fight comments: “If you give him a small opportunity, a small window to win, he’s gonna take it. So I’ve gotta shut him out everywhere, so hopefully it’s a finish, but if it’s not a finish all I know is I win.”

That tonal note is the right one. Respect the threat without softening the case. Malkoun is the call.

Kevin Christian vs. Junior Tafa

The cleanest pure striker-versus-grappler binary on the card. Tafa is the former Glory kickboxer with elite power but a poor MMA win-rate, currently 2-5 in the UFC after moving down from heavyweight. He has fast hands and knockout pop. He also has a non-existent ground game, atrocious takedown defense, and a gas tank that fades after the first round.

Christian stands six-foot-seven with an eighty-inch reach and earned his UFC contract via Contender Series triangle armbar. Source consensus describes him as an unathletic, flat-footed striker with a weak chin and terrible defense, but a legitimate Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu threat off his back. He lost his UFC debut to Billy Elekana via first-round submission. Notably, Tafa’s most recent loss was also to Elekana, by second-round rear-naked choke at UFC 325. The shared opponent doesn’t change the read on this fight, but it does mean both fighters have known vulnerabilities in their losses.

Tafa’s path to the win is the kill shot, either landing on the feet or stuffing a Christian takedown into a striking exchange he wins. Christian’s only path is an early successful takedown into a submission window. The model takes Tafa, with the path likely ending in a first-round knockout. Both fighters are in must-win territory, which gives the fight an urgency that the prelim slot doesn’t fully convey.

Robert Bryczek vs. Cam Rowston

The model takes Rowston with moderate-high conviction. He’s part of the City Kickboxing rising-star cluster on this card alongside Pericic and the late-notice Schmid. He’s actively transitioned from his original “Battle Giraffe” submission-specialist identity to a knockout-focused approach, reeling off six straight wins including two consecutive UFC stoppages.

Bryczek is a Polish veteran who lost his UFC debut to Ihor Potieria by decision before bouncing back with a third-round knockout over divisional mainstay Brad Tavares. His game is boxing-heavy with a tendency to square his hips, leaving him vulnerable to rangy kickboxers and calf kicks. The upset path runs through Rowston’s “tall man defense” leaving his chin exposed in the pocket, but Bryczek’s negative striking differential is a real flag against that case.

Rowston’s path runs through range, calf kicks, and either a TKO accumulation by the second or third round or a points-led decision. Decision is the most likely outcome. The pick is Rowston.

That closes out the prelims. Onto the main card.

Louie Sutherland vs. Tai Tuivasa

The model takes Tuivasa, with the matchmaking working as designed.

Tuivasa enters with the longest losing streak in UFC heavyweight division history. Six fights, including grappling losses to Volkov and Tybura that revealed how exposed he is when fights extend. His last UFC win was a knockout of Derrick Lewis at UFC 271, on February 12, 2022. Exactly four years to the night before this fight. The crowd dimension and the timing layer are part of why the matchmaking exists.

Sutherland is the short-notice replacement for Sean Sharaf, eight days’ notice, coming off two consecutive first-round losses including a forty-eight-second knockout to Brando Pericic. He’s 0-2 in the UFC and his path here is narrow. Tuivasa’s striking advantage is overwhelming if he keeps it standing in the early minutes, which against a fighter with Sutherland’s chin profile is the most likely outcome.

The fight has clean Round 1 KO contours. The Sutherland upset path requires him to survive long enough for Tuivasa’s late-career chin to become the issue, and the prep timeline doesn’t favor that scenario. Tuivasa snaps the skid.

Brando Peričić vs. Shamil Gaziev

The model takes Pericic with strong conviction. The matchup is binary, and the data tilts the binary in his direction.

Pericic is a six-foot-five City Kickboxing kickboxer with a one hundred percent first-round finishing rate across his six pro wins. His UFC debut was a first-round knockout of Elisha Ellison at one minute fifty-five. His second UFC fight was a first-round knockout of Louie Sutherland at one minute forty-eight. Source consensus calls him “the future of the heavyweight division repping Australia in a big way.” A win over the fifteenth-ranked Gaziev officially vaults him into the rankings.

Gaziev is the ranked veteran with a well-rounded MMA approach, IMMAF amateur world bronze, strong wrestling, and heavy hands. He cuts more than forty pounds to make the heavyweight limit. His most recent fight was an eighty-two-second knockout loss to Waldo Cortes-Acosta in November, which exposed exactly the vulnerability Pericic is built to exploit. If Gaziev survives the first round, his cardio and IQ should carry the championship-rounds version of this fight. But Pericic has never been past the first round in any pro win, which means both directions of the read have unanswered questions on the same axis.

The path is a Pericic first-round finish. The model reads it that way, and the recent precedent supports it.

Marwan Rahiki vs. Ollie Schmid

The strongest signal on the entire card.

Rahiki is the twenty-three-year-old undefeated Moroccan-Australian featherweight whose UFC debut was a Fight-of-the-Night second-round corner stoppage of Harry Hardwick. His pro record is 8-0 with one hundred percent finishes; he’s only been past the first round once in his career. His style is high-paced and dynamic, with spinning attacks and explosive boxing combinations.

Schmid is the four-days-notice UFC debutant. He’s twenty-four, 4-2 as a pro, training out of City Kickboxing in Auckland, on a three-fight win streak that ended in a fifteen-second spinning backfist knockout. He was preparing for a different opponent on May 30 before getting the call. Source consensus calls him a “sacrificial lamb” running into a “buzzsaw.”

The matchup is fundamentally tilted, and the conviction here doesn’t soften because of the late-notice scenario. The Schmid upset path exists in his finishing instinct — the spinning backfist is real — but Rahiki’s pressure, pace, and full camp against a fighter who hasn’t trained for him specifically is the cleanest analytical setup on the card. The pick lands on Rahiki, and the finish narrative is loud.

Steve Erceg vs. Tim Elliott

The model takes Erceg with moderate-high conviction, and this fight matters more for him than the model’s confidence might suggest.

Erceg is the twelfth-ranked flyweight, a Perth resident who developed at Wilkes Martial Arts and was fast-tracked to a Pantoja title shot at UFC 301 after just three UFC wins. He came competitive in that title fight, lost the decision, and entered a three-fight stretch with one win. A loss here pushes him out of the title-picture conversation entirely. Elliott is the thirty-nine-year-old TUF 24 veteran whose career has been a series of surprise turns, most recently a second-round guillotine submission of touted prospect Kai Asakura on his return from a 2024 layoff.

Erceg’s path is clean and technical: stuff Elliott’s takedowns, win the boxing exchanges, accumulate over fifteen minutes. The submission game underneath gives him a secondary path against a fading Elliott in the later rounds. Elliott’s path is wrestling-led chaos: chain takedowns, scrambles, and a chance at a submission window.

The most likely outcome is Erceg by decision. Erceg gets the call.

Quillan Salkilld vs. Beneil Dariush

The co-main event. The model has very strong conviction here, and the matchup is the prototypical passing-of-the-torch pairing.

Salkilld is the twenty-six-year-old Perth-based lightweight on an eleven-fight win streak. RAC Arena is ten minutes from his home; he attended a UFC event there as a fan in 2018. His UFC run is 4-0 with three finishes including a head-kick knockout of Nasrat Haqparast and a face-crank submission of Jamie Mullarkey at UFC 325. He won UFC.com’s 2025 Newcomer of the Year and Debut of the Year awards. The Mar Fan symmetry from the prelim opener applies here too: Salkilld is the fighter who solved Mar Fan twice, and he’s the fighter the matchmaking is now positioning for a major divisional push.

Dariush is the thirty-six-year-old former top-five lightweight whose chin and durability have collapsed in his late career. Three first-round knockout losses in his last four fights, including a sixteen-second loss to Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 322 where he missed weight and engaged recklessly. His grappling and BJJ remain elite. His striking has been the failure point.

In his pre-fight comments, Dariush told reporters: “Whether he wants to or I do, there will be some grappling exchanged because we both are grapplers.” He also openly questioned his own motivation. That self-aware uncertainty, against a finisher of Salkilld’s profile, is part of what makes the conviction land where it does.

The path runs through an early Salkilld knockout. Dariush’s grappling savvy could tie Salkilld up and drag the fight into the second round, which is the credible secondary read, but the underlying chin question is real. The torch passes.

Carlos Prates vs. Jack Della Maddalena

The closest call on the card. The model lands on Prates by the thinnest margin, and the read is honest about it. This is a true toss-up — a genuine coin flip with real paths to victory for both fighters and a stylistic chess match underneath.

Della Maddalena is fighting in his hometown for the first time since losing the title to Islam Makhachev at UFC 322. He’s spoken candidly about how much that loss weighed on him in the days after. He’s also been clear that the ultimate goal is the rematch. The boxing identity that built his nine-year unbeaten run before the Makhachev fight is intact: volume, pocket pressure, switch-stance combinations, body work, and what his Australian fans frequently call the cleanest hands in the division. The grappling vulnerability that Makhachev exposed isn’t relevant against Prates, who is a pure striker.

Prates enters on six knockouts since the start of 2024, more than any other UFC fighter in that span. The spinning back elbow finish of Geoff Neal at UFC 319 was a career highlight. The straight-left knockout of Leon Edwards at UFC 322 was the bigger signal: Edwards had never been knocked out before. Prates does this through a specific pattern. He starts slow in five-round fights, shells up defensively, makes striking reads while absorbing volume, and unleashes the kill shot in the middle or late rounds. The pattern has worked twice in a row against high-level competition. Whether it works a third time, in his opponent’s hometown, against a former champion who specifically wants to test the durability question, is the entire fight.

What makes this a toss-up rather than a lean is that the credible paths split cleanly. Prates wins by a second or third-round knockout via the straight left or a kick. Della Maddalena wins by out-volumng Prates over twenty-five minutes and either taking a decision or closing late once Prates gets hurt for the first time in his finishing run. The Prates cardio question across five rounds is real — he has never been past the third round in a winning fight at the highest level. The Della Maddalena durability question is real — Prates has finished two fighters in a row who had never been finished before him.

The model lands on Prates. But it lands there barely. Whoever wins takes the next welterweight title shot.

Out of thirteen fights, one official bet clears the bar: Ryan Spann at +120 against Marcus Buchecha. That’s the only Soft Edge on the card. Two prelim favorites (Francis Marshall and Jafel Filho) are flagged Speculative for tracking with no recommended stake. The other ten fights are Passes.

That isn’t a take. It’s the model’s honest read of where the numbers and the prices meet, and where they don’t. When a card doesn’t offer much, the right move is to bet less, not to manufacture conviction. So this week the action is small, and we’re saying that out loud.

Polastri vs. Alencar (Strawweight)

The model takes Julia Polastri. This is a stylistic puzzle Talita Alencar cannot solve cleanly. Alencar is a six-time BJJ world champion, but her takedown accuracy sits at 26 percent, and Polastri defends takedowns at 60. The math does not favor the grappler when she cannot reliably get the fight to the mat. Polastri’s recent third-round TKO over Karolina Kowalkiewicz showed real striking development, with sharp jab-cross-knee combinations and a willingness to commit to high kicks against durable opponents. Alencar absorbs 3.36 significant strikes per minute and defends at 55 percent, numbers that get worse against a striker landing 6.40 per minute. The path to victory for Alencar exists if she can replicate the body-lock takedowns Lupita Godinez used to drag Polastri down five times last year, but Godinez is a far more explosive wrestler than Alencar has ever been. Pick: Polastri.

Griffin vs. Valenzuela (Welterweight)

The model favors Victor Valenzuela in his UFC debut. Max Griffin is 40 years old and has lost three of his last four bouts, with the most recent submission loss to Michael Chiesa exposing his declining ability to recover from adversity. Valenzuela brings genuine kickboxing pedigree, a WGP Challenger Grand Prix title, and seven knockouts in 13 wins. The caveat is real: Valenzuela’s finishing rate was built against regional competition, and his Contender Series knockout loss to Michael Oliveira showed defensive holes. Griffin’s path is to use veteran footwork to neutralize the power and outpoint Valenzuela on volume. The model takes the younger, faster fighter to land cleaner shots in a striking exchange. Pick: Valenzuela.

Marshall vs. Brennan (Lightweight)

The model takes Francis Marshall in a fight that should not have been close to even money on paper. Lucas Brennan is making his UFC debut on five days notice, at lightweight rather than his natural featherweight, against an opponent who specifically counters his strengths. Brennan is an elite BJJ player with eight submission wins, but his standup is awkward and flat-footed, and he has lost both of his fights against step-up competition outside Bellator. Marshall counters him on every level: 54 percent striking defense, 66 percent takedown defense, and five submission wins of his own. Marshall has shown his grappling sharpness in past UFC outings. Brennan’s path requires forcing the fight to the mat against a wrestler who does not want to go there. Pick: Marshall.

Filho vs. Durden (Bantamweight)

The model takes Jafel Filho in the most lopsided spot on the card. Filho’s UFC pattern is exact: every win has been a first-round submission, with three different finishing holds across kimura, arm triangle, and rear-naked choke. Cody Durden is stepping in on six days notice, at a higher weight class, on a four-fight losing skid. He has been finished in six of his nine career losses, including four submissions. The transitive read through Allan Nascimento, who finished Durden and decisioned Filho, is informative but undermined by the report that Filho fought Nascimento with a staph infection. Durden’s only path is to grind out a sprawling, cardio-heavy decision against a fighter whose finish window is concentrated in the first round. The short notice undermines that path. Pick: Filho.

Bueno Silva vs. Montague (Women’s Bantamweight)

The model takes Michelle Montague in what looks like a passing-of-the-torch fight. Mayra Bueno Silva is on a four-fight skid against ranked opposition, and her game has visibly declined since the no-contest against Holly Holm. The 18-fight veteran has never been submitted, and that is the central tension here. Montague has won six of seven by rear-naked choke and brings genuine physical pressure, but her UFC debut against Luana Carolina revealed she can be hit cleanly on the feet, with 41 percent striking defense and visible moments of being rocked in round two. The former teammate dynamic favors Montague, who claims to know exactly how Bueno Silva strikes and sets up submissions from their American Top Team sparring. Dumas vs. McVey (Middleweight)

The model takes Jackson McVey, which is a notable call given McVey is 0-2 in the UFC. The case rests on Sedriques Dumas looking checked out in his recent loss to Donte Johnson, where he tapped instantly to a weak front choke. Both fighters are oversized middleweights who fail to use their reach effectively, and both bring all-offense styles that produce chaotic exchanges. McVey has stopped every professional opponent he has beaten, all in the first round. The path for Dumas is real if he commits to his front-headlock series and exposes McVey’s aggressive entries to a guillotine. The model thinks that McVey’s offense overwhelms a Dumas who has not looked himself in over a year. Pick: McVey.

Vieira vs. McConico (Middleweight)

The model takes Rodolfo Vieira to close the prelims. The Black Belt Hunter has nine of his eleven wins by submission, with a heavy preference for arm triangle chokes when he can establish top position. Eric McConico’s takedown defense sits at 64 percent, and his striking defense is suspect against fighters who can drag him into grappling exchanges. The Bo Nickal head kick KO showed Vieira’s striking defense remains a liability, but he is not facing a striker of that caliber here. McConico’s path is to survive the early grappling onslaught, drag Vieira into a slow-paced grind, and capitalize if Vieira’s cardio fades in round three. The model expects Vieira to find a finish before that happens. Pick: Vieira.

Buchecha vs. Spann (Heavyweight)

The model is on Ryan Spann at plus-money. This is the contrarian read of the card. Marcus Buchecha is a 15-time BJJ world champion with elite submission credentials, but his MMA transition has been rocky. He lost his UFC debut to Martin Buday and drew with Kennedy Nzechukwu, two fights that exposed his rudimentary striking and unreliable takedown technique. Spann is 6-foot-5 with genuine knockout power and a guillotine choke that has finished better grapplers than Buchecha has ever fought. Spann’s pattern of not winning a fight outside the first round since 2020 is a real concern, but the model reads this as a window where his striking advantage and physical frame create a finish opportunity before Buchecha’s ground game becomes a factor. The risk is real. Buchecha’s BJJ pedigree is the highest on the card, and Spann has been known to make poor decisions when his early offense fails. Pick: Spann.

Jackson vs. Barcelos (Bantamweight)

The analytical concern is what that record was built against. Twelve years of regional competition with a heavy concentration of opponents holding losing records is not a profile that translates cleanly to UFC level. Grant is a 10-year veteran who has shared the Octagon with Marlon Vera, Jonathan Martinez, and Raphael Assuncao. His recent guillotine loss to Charles Jourdain exposed a vulnerability to chaotic club-and-sub sequences, and Luna Martinetti has six career submission wins to threaten that. But Grant’s technical boxing, calf kicks, and underrated grappling are a level Luna Martinetti has not seen. The model sides on the veteran. Pick: Grant.

García vs. Hernandez (Lightweight)

The model takes Alexander Hernandez. This is the strongest analytical call in the lower main card. Hernandez is on a four-fight win streak with knockouts of Chase Hooper and Diego Ferreira, and his recent run against Austin Hubbard and Kurt Holobaugh shows he is operating at a higher level than García has tested himself against. García’s recent wins have come against aging veterans in Jared Gordon, Vinc Pichel, and Clay Guida. The cancelled UFC 324 bout against Michael Johnson and the betting irregularity controversy that followed has been a public stress on Hernandez, and he has not fought since September 2025. The model projects that his speed, lateral movement, and counter-striking outpoint García’s pressure over fifteen minutes. García’s Mexican chin keeps him in fights but rarely wins them at this level. Pick: Hernandez.

Dumont vs. Edwards (Women’s Bantamweight, Co-Main)

The model takes Norma Dumont in a fight that should determine the next title challenger at women’s bantamweight. Joselyne Edwards is on a four-fight finishing streak and brings real striking advantages: a three-inch reach edge, faster hands, and harder power. The problem is her takedown defense, which sits at 61 percent against fighters who commit to the wrestling. Dumont averages 1.56 takedowns per 15 minutes with a 56 percent accuracy rate, and her pressure-and-clinch style is built specifically to neutralize rangy strikers. The Ailin Perez fight is the relevant comparison. Perez took Edwards down six times and controlled her with smothering top game, and Dumont is a stronger version of that profile. Sterling vs. Zalal (Featherweight, Main Event)

The model takes Youssef Zalal. The Moroccan Devil is on an eight-fight win streak with four submissions in his last five wins, and he brings a 100 percent finish rate inside the distance against an opponent who has historically dropped late rounds in five-round fights. Aljamain Sterling is the more decorated fighter and the better wrestler, and he has gone 2-1 at featherweight with decision wins over Calvin Kattar and Brian Ortega. The case for Sterling is structural. He is the better grappler, the Apex small cage limits Zalal’s lateral movement, and his chain wrestling has historically been good enough to take any fight to the mat. The case for Zalal is that he has never been finished, his takedown defense has held up, and his cardio in five-round fights is unproven but his pace in three-rounders has been excellent. Sterling’s gas tank is the central question. He visibly faded against Petr Yan twice, against Henry Cejudo, and against Brian Ortega in his most recent five-round bout. The model reads Zalal’s youth, size advantage, and finishing instinct as the structural edge. The path for Sterling is to wrestle Zalal early and grind out three rounds before fatigue arrives. The contrarian read is Spann at plus money against Buchecha, the only underdog the model takes on the card. The main and co-main carry title implications regardless of model conviction, with Zalal and Dumont representing the model’s read on where the divisions are heading.

Charles Jourdain delivered the sharpest result of the night. One Sharp Edge on the card, 2.00u on the line, and he went out and won a clean unanimous decision. +1.48u. That is the whole point of this model.

Soft Edge went 3-1-1. Croden, Saricam, and Jasudavicius all cashed. The Siraj loss was a brutal first-round KO finish that ended that one fast. The Castaneda draw was a push and a story of its own.

Malott won the main event by KO in round three. The model backed him on direction but the odds were not offering enough value to stake, so we sat it out. Right call on the outcome.

The UFC returns to Winnipeg for the first time since December 2017, and the card that’s walking into Canada Life Centre this Saturday is genuinely different from the one that left eight years ago. Nine Canadians on the lineup. Three making their Octagon debut. A Canadian-born headliner, just the third in UFC history to headline a card on home soil.

Analytically, this is a card with unusual distribution. Five fights carry extreme model conviction. A handful sit in honest toss-up territory. And the main event, for all its noise about one fighter being written off and another being crowned, has a much more textured path than the line suggests.

Here’s the full read, bout by bout.

Fight 1, Jamie Siraj vs. John Yannis (Bantamweight)

The opener is a short-notice affair on both sides, with Jamie Siraj stepping in to make his UFC debut against John Yannis. Siraj brings 14 pro wins with 11 finishes and a submission-heavy game built on forward pressure and chain-wrestling. Yannis lost his UFC debut to Austin Bashi via rear-naked choke in the first round, and that’s the template that matters here. Yannis’s defensive grappling was exposed badly in that fight, and Siraj is walking in with the exact toolset to exploit it.

The one real unknown: Siraj is cutting to 135 for the first time in roughly eight years. Weight cuts of that scale at the UFC level are genuine X-factors, and the weigh-in result is the number to watch.

Fight 2, John Castaneda vs. Mark Vologdin (Bantamweight)

One of the genuine toss-ups of the card. John Castaneda is the veteran, 21-8 pro, 4-4 in the UFC, a volume striker with a six-inch reach advantage and the cardio to push three rounds. Mark Vologdin makes his UFC debut after a decision loss to Luna Martinetti on the Contender Series, a fight widely called one of the best in DWCS history despite the result.

The tactical wrinkle: Vologdin absorbed over eleven significant strikes per minute in that DWCS fight and still stood in the pocket swinging. His striking defense is a real concern, but his durability and output are legitimate. Castaneda’s path is experience, reach, and a steadier pace over fifteen minutes. Vologdin’s path is chaos.

The model takes Castaneda. Fight of the Night is on the table.

Fight 3, JJ Aldrich vs. Jamey-Lyn Horth (Women’s Flyweight)

Jamey-Lyn Horth is trending up. Back-to-back wins capped by her first UFC finish, a TKO of Tereza Bledá in December 2025. She’s a BJJ black belt training out of Niagara Top Team, and she’s described by teammates and coaches alike as having grown into her physicality. She’s taller, stronger, and operates from the clinch with real intent.

JJ Aldrich is the veteran, 14-7 pro, 10-6 in the UFC, ranked at flyweight. But her losses follow a pattern. Blanchfield submitted her off a guillotine. Hardy outworked her on the cards. Barber finished her with strikes. The common thread is physicality and pressure, both of which Horth brings in abundance.

The model takes Horth. Momentum, size, and a stylistic mismatch that favors the Canadian.

Fight 4, Melissa Croden vs. Daria Zhelezniakova (Women’s Bantamweight)

Melissa Croden is the grinder. Third UFC start in seven months, heavy clinch pressure, wrestling-forward at 5’9”, a physical profile that plays well at bantamweight. Daria Zhelezniakova is a sharp kickboxer with 2-1 in the UFC, but her loss came by first-round arm-triangle submission to Ailin Perez. The moment the fight hit the mat, it was over.

Croden’s game is exactly what Zhelezniakova struggles with. If this stays standing, Zhelezniakova can outpoint her. But Croden’s forward pressure and clinch game make “staying standing” a difficult proposition across fifteen minutes.

The model takes Croden. The fight is won in the clinch, and that favors Croden.

Fight 5, Tanner Boser vs. Gokhan Saricam (Heavyweight)

Tanner Boser returns to the UFC after a two-year absence, one regional fight in UAE Warriors, and a career reset. He’s the Canadian with homecoming energy, and his striking numbers (SLpM 4.70, SApM 2.75) remain respectable. But takedown defense at 63% and a long layoff against a wrestler with finishing upside is a difficult matchup.

Gokhan Saricam comes in on three straight wins, two by first-round stoppage, with a kickboxing base and a developed wrestling game from his Bellator run. If he closes distance and gets Boser to the mat, the gatekeeper shift finishes the job.

Boser’s path is real. Outland Saricam on the feet and use his mobility to stay off the cage. The crowd will be behind him.

The model takes Saricam. Wrestling is the separator.

Fight 6, Julien Leblanc vs. Robert Valentin (Middleweight)

One of the most honest toss-ups on the card, and a fight where the analytical case cuts both ways. Julien Leblanc is the Canadian debutant, 34 years old, five-fight win streak, three straight finishes, Samourai MMA middleweight champion, training alongside Marc-André Barriault out of Kill Cliff FC. His narrative is a decade of setbacks finally paying off with a UFC contract.

Robert Valentin is the other side of the ledger, 0-3 in the UFC, a TUF 32 finalist who hasn’t been able to translate that run into an Octagon win. Tall, rangy, submission threat, but exposed against wrestlers.

Valentin has the UFC-level tape. Leblanc has the regional momentum and home crowd.

The model takes Valentin by the thinnest margin.

Fight 7, Dennis Buzukja vs. Marcio Barbosa (Featherweight)

Marcio Barbosa is a first-round finisher. 16 of his 17 career wins have come in round one, fourteen of them by KO or TKO. He’s 27, fresh off a Contender Series finish of Damon Wilson, and he walks in throwing short, violent combinations at extreme volume.

Dennis Buzukja is returning from an eighteen-month layoff that included a nine-month suspension from a backstage fan altercation at UFC 310. His statistical profile shows him absorbing more than he lands, and his lone UFC stoppage loss came on a short hook, the exact punch Barbosa throws as his primary weapon.

But here’s the reason to pump the brakes. Barbosa’s entire UFC-captured statistical profile is built on one fight, his DWCS appearance against Damon Wilson. That’s a small sample to build an 8.27 significant strikes per minute read on, and it’s an even smaller sample to assume he can replicate that output against an Octagon veteran. Buzukja has 75% takedown defense, UFC reps, and the kind of pace that tends to drag explosive first-round finishers into uncomfortable second and third rounds.

If Buzukja weathers the first five minutes, the later rounds start tilting his direction. That’s the live underdog case.

The model takes Barbosa, with Buzukja as the live underdog if he survives the first round.

Fight 8, Thiago Moisés vs. Gauge Young (Lightweight)

The model leans Young on pace and volume. Moisés absorbs over four strikes a minute and Young lands nearly six. Moisés is the veteran, 31 years old, with seven career submission wins and a history of calf-kick-heavy gameplans. But his last outing ended in a first-round knockout loss to Jared Gordon, and his striking absorption numbers have gotten worse over time.

Young is 25, coming off a unanimous decision win over Maheshate at UFC Shanghai, and his 71% UFC takedown defense neutralizes Moisés’s reactive wrestling. The tactical question is whether Young’s chin holds up to Moisés’s power. He’s been hit clean by every UFC opponent so far and kept coming.

The model takes Young.

Fight 9, Jasmine Jasudavicius (#7) vs. Karine Silva (#9) (Women’s Flyweight)

The cleanest stylistic mismatch on the card. Karine Silva is a submission finisher, 17 stoppages in 19 career wins, 1.5 submission attempts per fifteen minutes, a BJJ black belt with heel hooks, guillotines, and D’Arce chokes in her history. Her problem is that she needs the fight on the mat in her favor to win, and her takedown defense sits at 21%.

Jasmine Jasudavicius is the grinding wrestler with 75% takedown defense, strong top control, and the kind of active ground-and-pound that turns dominant position into damage. She’s coming off the first stoppage loss of her career, a Manon Fiorot KO in October 2025, and took a deliberate six-month layoff to reset. She’s a Canadian fighting in Canada, sharing a gym with the main event headliner.

Silva’s path is a first-round submission off a scramble. If that window closes, Jasudavicius controls the remaining ten minutes.

The model takes Jasudavicius with real conviction.

Fight 10, Mandel Nallo vs. Jai Herbert (Lightweight)

Mandel Nallo’s UFC debut is one of the compelling stories of the card. Thirty-six years old, a Vancouver native now training at Tristar Gym under Firas Zahabi, he’s the oldest fighter ever to earn a Dana White’s Contender Series contract. His record is 14-3 with a no-contest, his last five wins are all first-round finishes, and his career finish rate is 100%.

Jai Herbert is the UFC veteran stopgap. 3-5-1 in the Octagon, thirteen months since his last fight (a split-decision loss to Chris Padilla), and a reach-and-range striker with a history of getting finished when pressured. Nallo’s best performances have come against strikers who let him get inside. His worst have come against wrestlers who took him down. Herbert is not a wrestler.

The model takes Nallo. A UFC debut under the brightest lights of his career is the only variable worth flagging.

Fight 11, Kyler Phillips vs. Charles Jourdain (Co-Main Event, Bantamweight)

The co-main is the clearest read on the card.

Charles Jourdain is a different fighter at his natural bantamweight. Two fights at 135, two first-round guillotine finishes, one over Victor Henry (a fighter who had never been finished prior) and the next over Davey Grant. That’s four career wins by guillotine in total, alongside Lando Vannata and Ricardo Ramos earlier in his career. The pattern is not a coincidence. It’s a specialty.

Kyler Phillips walks in on a two-fight losing streak after decision losses to Rob Font and Vinicius Oliveira. His 75% takedown defense is real. Jourdain isn’t going to put him on his back. But Phillips’s own wrestling is the problem here. Jourdain’s takedown defense sits at 47%, which means Phillips can score takedowns, but every sloppy level change against a guillotine specialist is a live trap.

Add the rest. Jourdain has 5.48 significant strikes per minute to Phillips’s 5.04. He’s been more active recently, more confident, and publicly stated he’d be the first fighter to finish Phillips. Phillips has never been finished across sixteen pro fights, but Jourdain’s momentum, pace, and finishing pattern fit this matchup tightly.

The model takes Jourdain.

Fight 12, Gilbert Burns vs. Mike Malott (Main Event, Welterweight, 5 rounds)

The model lands on Mike Malott, and the case is genuine, but it is not the closed book the market treats it as.

Malott’s case is straightforward. He’s eight years younger at 34, he’s sharper on the feet, his differential is positive (3.93 significant strikes landed per minute against 3.06 absorbed), and he’s never been knocked down in the UFC. He’s fighting in Canada for the sixth straight time, fighting under his own home-gym roof, and stepping into his first UFC main event with the analytical profile of a fighter who’s earned it.

Gilbert Burns’s case is harder. He walks in on a four-fight skid, all against elite competition (Morales, Brady, Della Maddalena, Muhammad) but a skid nonetheless. He has ten knockdowns absorbed across his UFC career. His last fight was a first-round TKO loss to Michael Morales eleven months ago, and questions about his chin at 39 are fair.

Here’s the honest counter. Malott’s takedown defense sits at 14%. His one UFC loss came when Neil Magny took him down four times on four attempts and finished him in round three of a fight he was winning. Burns is a four-time World Jiu-Jitsu champion with nine career submission wins. He has never been submitted across twenty-two pro fights. And Malott has never fought past the third round in the UFC. A 25-minute championship round cardio test is genuinely untested territory.

Burns’s path exists. It requires surviving the striking phase early, dragging Malott into deep water, and either winning late rounds on cards or finding a finish on the mat. It’s a narrower path than the 9-1 pro record of Malott suggests, but it’s real.

The model takes Malott. His path is sharper striking, youth, and solid cardio that Burns no longer has. If Burns wins, it’s through his grappling, not his chin.

Closing Read

This card has depth in unexpected places. The co-main carries the clearest read of the night. The main event is genuinely more textured than the market treats it. The prelims have a genuine sleeper angle in Buzukja, and the Canadian debut wave, Nallo, Leblanc, Siraj, means three storylines worth following regardless of outcomes.

UFC 327 lands in Miami with something genuinely rare on the line: a vacant light heavyweight title and no clear favorite to claim it. Alex Pereira vacated the belt to pursue heavyweight gold. Magomed Ankalaev is sidelined. The UFC has turned to Jiri Prochazka — the man who never lost the championship in competition — and Carlos Ulberg, riding the division’s longest active win streak, to settle it. Beyond the main event, this is a card with real analytical depth from top to bottom. Several fights carry genuine finish potential, a few carry legitimate upset signals, and at least one carries something rarer than either — a retirement story worth watching regardless of how the numbers fall.

Here is where the model lands across all twelve fights.

CHARLES RADTKE vs. FRANCISCO PRADO Welterweight | Early Prelims

Prado is a 23-year-old brawler with an iron chin and genuine power, but his three-fight UFC losing streak has exposed a consistent problem: he cannot handle the size and reach of natural welterweights, and his defensive wrestling leaves him vulnerable to grapplers who want to control him. Radtke brings both of those problems to the table. He carries a BJJ black belt, a physical wrestling game, and the fight IQ to abandon the brawl when the brawl is not working — as he demonstrated with his third-round rear naked choke over Daniel Frunza. Prado’s durability will likely push this into the later rounds, but the model sees Radtke’s pressure and chain wrestling wearing him down.

The model’s pick is Radtke.

KELVIN GASTELUM vs. VICENTE LUQUE Middleweight | Early Prelims

This fight carries a significant asterisk: Luque is moving up from welterweight to middleweight, and the analytical implications cut both ways. Avoiding a brutal weight cut may marginally help his durability, but he will be the naturally smaller man absorbing shots from a fighter with Gastelum’s hand speed and physical thickness. The durability concerns around Luque are well-documented — he has looked hesitant and gun-shy under pressure in recent losses, and his front choke submission game, while genuinely dangerous, requires him to survive long enough to deploy it. Gastelum has never been knocked out in his career despite fighting elite competition, and his southpaw left hand down the pipe remains a legitimate weapon. The conditioning questions around Gastelum are noted, but the analytical case points clearly in his direction here. A stoppage is not out of the question if Luque’s durability breaks down under sustained pressure.

The model’s pick is Gastelum.

CHRIS PADILLA vs. MARQUEL MEDEROS Lightweight | Prelims

Padilla is one of the more analytically compelling fighters on this card. His performance against Ismael Bonfim — absorbing big shots without retreating, grinding forward, and finishing with ground and pound and a knee to the body in round two — revealed a fighter with genuine toughness and the pressure game to break athletic opponents who are not used to being tested. Mederos is fast, smooth, and effective at range with his calf-kicking game and lateral movement, but his recent fights have exposed a recurring grappling vulnerability: he gives up his back when scrambling to his feet, and he has been controlled by wrestlers at this level before. Padilla’s Muay Thai guard, clinch weapons, and offensive grappling create a structural problem Mederos has not yet solved. The model is as confident here as anywhere on the card. A finish in the later rounds via rear naked choke or ground and pound is a realistic outcome.

TATIANA SUAREZ vs. LOOPY GODINEZ Women’s Strawweight | Prelims

Suarez’s road back has not been seamless. Her title fight loss to Zhang Weili exposed real questions about her explosiveness and takedown efficiency post-injury, and even her win over Amanda Lemos saw her tire in the third round and struggle to convert takedown attempts at the rate she once did. Those are legitimate concerns for a fighter whose entire game is built on physical dominance. Godinez, however, has a well-documented pattern of losing to elite grapplers — Mackenzie Dern and Virna Jandiroba both controlled her on the mat — and Suarez, even at a reduced level, remains the more physically imposing wrestler in this matchup. The model sees Suarez grinding out a decision, though the days of explosive early submissions may be behind her.

The model’s pick is Suarez.

MATEUSZ GAMROT vs. ESTEBAN RIBOVICS Lightweight | Prelims

This is a classic striker versus wrestler matchup with a clear analytical spine. Gamrot averages over five takedowns per fifteen minutes and has the chain wrestling to keep opponents pinned against the cage for extended stretches. Ribovics is a high-volume brawler with the cardio to maintain a blistering pace deep into a fight. The key question is whether Ribovics can keep the fight standing long enough for his striking volume to matter. His recent performance stuffing fourteen of fifteen takedown attempts against Elves Brener is encouraging, but his fight against Loik Radzhabov tells a different story: eleven takedowns conceded on twenty-one attempts against a truly persistent chain wrestler. Gamrot is that level of persistent. Ribovics’ chin is a genuine threat if he lands clean combinations on a fighter who has been dropped before, but the model sees Gamrot’s wrestling as the dominant force across fifteen minutes.

The model’s pick is Gamrot.

RANDY BROWN vs. KEVIN HOLLAND Welterweight | Prelims

Two 6’3” welterweights with matching reach and matching inconsistency. Brown is the cleaner, more technical outside fighter — his jab and distance management allow him to win rounds without absorbing punishment. Holland is the chaos agent, capable of looking elite and completely disinterested in the same fight. Brown’s durability has been flagged repeatedly, and his knockout loss to Gabriel Bonfim confirmed that a clean shot from a powerful fighter can end his night early. Holland’s grappling is underrated and his opportunistic front chokes are a legitimate finish threat. This is a genuinely close matchup, and the model’s lean toward Brown reflects his structural edge in clean outside boxing rather than any overwhelming analytical dominance.

The model’s pick is Brown.

PATRICIO PITBULL vs. AARON PICO Featherweight | Prelims

Pico is the obvious analytical favorite here on paper: younger, more explosive, elite wrestling credentials, and heavy hands. His UFC debut against Lerone Murphy confirmed he can be stopped, however, and Pitbull is precisely the kind of composed veteran counter-striker who can make Pico pay for reckless forward pressure. Pitbull’s guillotine choke is a genuine threat if Pico shoots desperately, and his timing on the counter right hand has finished fights at the highest level. The model does not bet this fight at the current price, which reflects how live the upset potential is. Pico’s clearest route to victory runs through his wrestling — use it to neutralize Pitbull’s striking and grind out a decision or TKO. Pitbull’s window is narrower but genuine — patience, composure, and one well-timed shot.

The model’s pick is Pico.

CUB SWANSON vs. NATE LANDWEHR Featherweight | Main Card

Cub Swanson has announced this is his last fight. At 42 years old, with a career stretching back to the WEC, he steps into the octagon against the kind of opponent who has ended careers: a relentless, high-volume brawler who will absorb damage to close distance and make the night miserable. Landwehr is dangerous in exactly the way that tests aging fighters. He does not give you clean, comfortable exchanges. He smothers and grinds and pressures until something breaks.

What the data says is this: something has been breaking in Landwehr’s own chin. Back-to-back third-round knockout losses against Morgan Charriere and Doo Ho Choi suggest his durability under sustained pressure is deteriorating. Swanson’s counter-boxing, timing, and stopping power remain intact as recently as his third-round finish of Billy Quarantillo. The model sees Swanson’s technical precision eventually finding the opening Landwehr’s aggression creates. A finish in the later rounds is the most analytically supported outcome. The model is as confident here as anywhere on this card.

The model’s pick is Swanson.

DOMINICK REYES vs. JOHNNY WALKER Light Heavyweight | Main Card

There is very little analytical certainty available in this fight, and the model reflects that. Both men carry genuine knockout power and genuinely fragile chins. Reyes is the cleaner technical boxer with a strong straight left hand and counter-striking instincts. Walker is the bigger, more physically explosive fighter with finishing power in either hand and the unpredictability that makes him dangerous from any position. Reyes was frozen and timid in his first-round loss to Ulberg, and the adjustment required is real. Walker’s recent win over Zhang Mingyang showed a slightly more measured approach, using calf kicks to break down his opponent before finding the finish.

This fight is unlikely to see the second round. The model lands on Reyes, but the margin is thin and the chaos factor is about as high as it gets on this card.

CURTIS BLAYDES vs. JOSH HOKIT Heavyweight | Main Card

Hokit is genuinely intriguing. An undefeated two-time Division 1 All-American wrestler with fast hands and a relentless pace, he presents a legitimate athletic challenge even for a fighter with Blaydes’ credentials. The analytical concerns around Blaydes are real: a torn MCL in his last fight, consecutive knockout losses to elite heavyweights, and a declining speed that has made his wrestling less automatic. Hokit is undersized at around 230 pounds against a 260-pound Blaydes, however, and his UFC record is built against minimal competition. The gap in elite experience is significant. Blaydes’ size, reach, and wrestling pedigree remain formidable tools against an opponent at this level, and the model sees him weathering the early pressure and imposing his game over the course of the fight.

The model’s pick is Blaydes.

AZAMAT MURZAKANOV vs. PAULO COSTA Light Heavyweight | Co-Main Event

Murzakanov enters this fight undefeated at 16-0 with ten first-round finishes and a knockout power that does not require him to load up. His step-in jab recently put Aleksandar Rakic to sleep. Costa’s move to light heavyweight avoids a brutal weight cut that may have been affecting his conditioning, and he is actually the taller man in the cage at 6’1” against Murzakanov’s compact 5’10” frame. The iron chin and high volume that define Costa’s best performances are genuine assets.

The concern is how that chin holds up against true light heavyweight power for the first time. Costa has been finished by strikes only once in his career, but Murzakanov’s power operates at a different register than anything he has previously absorbed at middleweight. Costa’s most viable route runs through volume, body kicks, and surviving the early rounds to wear Murzakanov down — a fighter who has shown he can fade in extended fights. The model leans toward Murzakanov, acknowledging this is one of the more genuinely contested fights on the card.

The model’s pick is Murzakanov.

JIRI PROCHAZKA vs. CARLOS ULBERG Light Heavyweight Championship | Main Event | 5 Rounds

The light heavyweight title is vacant. Pereira is gone. Ankalaev is sidelined. What remains is the man who won the belt and never lost it in competition, and the fighter who has quietly built the division’s longest active win streak without anyone paying close enough attention.

Ulberg deserves genuine analytical respect. His first-round dismantling of Dominick Reyes was not a lucky punch. It was a composed, technical performance that showed how far he has developed since his debut loss to Kennedy Nzechukwu. He manages distance expertly, punishes overextension with his check left hook, and his strike absorption rate has dropped dramatically as his career has progressed. The case for an early Ulberg victory is analytically coherent: hunt Prochazka’s lead leg, manage range, and catch him lunging in the first or second round.

Prochazka’s entire career, however, has been built in the space where that plan falls apart. He absorbs damage without going out. He builds pressure relentlessly. He gets more dangerous, not less, as fights deteriorate into chaos in the championship rounds. His finish rate borders on absurd. He has never seen a UFC judges’ scorecard. Against Khalil Rountree, he lost the first two rounds convincingly before walking through damage to secure a third-round finish. That is not an anomaly. It is the pattern.

Ulberg has never been in a five-round fight. Championship rounds are uncharted territory. Prochazka lives there.

The model sees Prochazka getting his title back tonight. A finish in the championship rounds is the most analytically supported outcome.
